A screen-and-recoat approach can slightly darken a finish without full sanding, but a real colour change — especially going lighter — usually needs the old finish and stain sanded off first, which moves the job into full refinishing rather than staining alone.

Blotching happens when wood absorbs stain unevenly, which is more common on certain species like pine or maple.
